Summary, 11.04.2020 - 5-10 % of negative corona-tests are actually positive

Yet another calm day. However, up to 10 % of negative corona-virus-tests may actually be positive. Apart from that, there were some minor updates to the official guidelines to childbirth with corona-infected women and partners, as well as some promising news regarding a possible vaccine.

  1. At least 5 to 10 % of negative corona-tests are actually positive, according to an update to common practitioners from the Danish Health Authority.

  2. There may be reason to CAUTIOUS optimism today since a team of researchers at Oxford University is working on a corona-virus vaccine, which can possibly be ready already in September. Danish researchers are more sceptical though, saying it can take at least a year before a preemptive vaccine can be taken into use.

  3. The Danish Health Authority has updated its guidelines regarding births, where a corona-infected child-birthing woman no longer needs to wear a mask, and a partner suspected of being infected with corona can now be tested.

  4. An analysis done by Dansk Byggeri shows that up to 7.700 internships for students studying on vocational educations can disappear this year, due to the corona-crisis.

  • 5.996 have tested positive, 177 more than yesterday (Since it is not everyone with symptoms of corona-virus who is being tested, the real amount of infected is estimated to be much higher).

  • 408 are hospitalized, 7 more than yesterday.

  • Of those 408, 106 are in intensive care, 7 less than yesterday.

  • Of those 106, 90 are in respirators, 5 less than yesterday.

  • 260 Corona-infected Danes have died, 13 more than yesterday.

  • 67.771 have been tested for corona-virus, with 5.996 positives.

  • 1.955 are reported as healthy again, after having been hospitalized with corona-virus, an increase of 182 from yesterday.

  • At least 5 to 10 % of negative corona-tests are actually positive, according to an update to common practitioners from the Danish Health Authority. However, a negative test answer cannot stand alone in the medical evaluation regarding whether a patient is infected with corona-virus. "With our current knowledge we know, that a certain amount of those tested negative are yet infected with covid-19," it says in the material. Problems with false results can occur if the swabbing in the throat is done at a stage, where the patient doesn't have any symptoms yet, or at a late stage, where the virus has moved down in the respiratory system. It can also be due to not enough virus being scraped up from the throat.

  • There may be reason for CAUTIOUS optimism today since a team of researchers at Oxford University is working on a corona-virus vaccine, which can possibly be ready already in September. Professor in vaccinology at Oxford University, and head of the research project, Sarah Gilbert, says to The Times that she is 80 % sure that the vaccine will work. Human trials might begin already next week, after trials on mice has proven promising. The British government has already declared itself ready to put in millions of pounds if the results are promising. However, Danish scientists say that the timespan from starting human trials, till a vaccine that can be used preemptively in the Danish population, can easily be at least a year. On the positive note, though, the Danish Medicine Agency has informed, that they can complete the process of approving such a vaccine in only 70 days, instead of the usual 210 days.

  • The Danish Health Authority has updated its guidelines regarding births:

  1. Common practitioners can now decide that a person sharing a household with a pregnant woman can be tested for corona-virus if the person in question is having mild symptoms of covid-19. If the person is infected, he/she cannot attend the birth, and must also attempt to avoid the pregnant woman, by keeping social distance, staying in different rooms, and clean often and thoroughly in the house.

  2. Corona-infected women do no longer need to wear a mask during childbirth since the staff must already wear protective equipment.

  • Recent news from South Korea seems to indicate, that the corona-virus can re-activate in patients. Professor in virology at the University of Copenhagen Allan Randrup Thomsen doesn't believe this is the case, but that it is rather because the amount of virus particles in the respiratory system goes down below the detective threshold of the tests, only to surge again, and then you can swing between positive and negative results over a certain period. However, not much indicates so far, that patients in this state can infect others. However, further research is needed, in order to make more sense of the current data. And in this case, a new connection might be proven. But there is nothing new in that you can test positive for a disease, even if you have formally recovered.

  • The distribution of hospitalised/intensive care/respiratory patients are as below:

Region Nordjylland: 25 / 9 / 7.

Region Midtjylland: 68 / 19 / 18.

Region Syddanmark: 56 / 15 / 14.

Region Sjælland: 59 / 14 / 11.

Region Hovedstaden: 200 / 49 / 40.

  • The Novo Nordisk Fund and the Carlsberg Fund has allocated 17.5 million kroner to emergency production of ethanol, which must be used as a disinfectant in e.g. hand sanitizers. The money will be used to create a consortium between the Danish state, Carlsberg, Ørsted and Ree Holding, which will be put together in a new company underneath the National Police. The target is to produce ca. 36.000 litres of ethanol per day, which is approximately 1/3 of the daily need in Denmark.

  • The Danish authorities have a current goal of testing at least 10.000 Danes daily for corona-virus, but so far it hasn't been achieved. Monday marked the highest amount of tests with 6.009 tests, according to numbers from the Danish Institute for Serum.

  • An analysis done by the interest organisation Danish Construction (Dansk Byggeri) shows that up to 7.700 internships for students studying on vocational educations can disappear this year, due to the corona-crisis. The best scenario put forward expects a drop of 2.600 internships. The organisation encourages the government, employers and workers' unions to negotiate an agreement ensuring internships this year.

  • A 51-year-old man was arrest last night for breaking and entering Middelfart Hospital, stealing, among other things, hand sanitizer. He was put forward in the constitutional hearing Saturday at 11, and the court found reason to proceed with the use of the double-sanction-charge, due to corona-related crime, which was recently agreed upon in the Parliament.

  • Several of the news magazines across the country have experienced an explosive increase in new subscribers compared to the same period last year.

  • The Ringriderfest in Sønderborg won't be held this year. The event was supposed to have taken place from the 10th-13th of July, and gathers annually 40.000 visitors.

  • Socialistisk Folkeparti (The People's Socialistic Party) proposes to find extra funds to the child-care institutions by increasing the minimum amount of social workers in the institutions for the coming years. This would happen by allocating the amount of money that would not be allocated before 2022 to this year and 2021 - a total amount of 800 million kroner, whereof 300 million would be used this year. "In corona-times we must also acknowledge, that there will be a need for more adults in our institutions. This is because there must be fewer children in the different groups, while at the same time ensuring the possibility of adult contact" says Pia Olsen Dyhr, party leader for Socialistisk Folkeparti. The party hopes that by giving the institutions more money, they can more easily fulfil the new guidelines regarding extra cleaning, larger division of groups of children, and more controlled social activities. The party wants to find the funding from the same check-out as the various help-packages given to particularly Danish business life.

  • Enhedslisten (The Red-Green Alliance) doesn't believe the 300 million kroner this year will be enough. "We have 4.000 children-care institutions. And it will be necessary to hire several substitute workers on every single institution," says Enhedslisten's children-political spokesman Jakob Sølvhøj. The party hasn't come up with a more concrete number than the 300 million though.

  • Political spokesman for De Konservative (The Conservatives) Mette Abildgaard doesn't believe, that we know yet whether more social workers in the child-care institutions will be needed during the corona-crisis: "There is no doubt, that this will require something extraordinary from the social workers. But whether it will require further economical resources it is simply too early to conclude upon, before we know how many children will need to be taken care of".
